In View of Baalbek (1868) by Frederic Edwin Church, the artist presents a panoramic landscape of the ancient city of Baalbek, located in present-day Lebanon, with the towering ruins of the Roman temple complex as the central focus. The scene is dominated by the grand Temple of Bacchus and the remaining columns of the Temple of Jupiter, which rise impressively above the verdant greenery of the surrounding valley. In the distance, snow-capped mountains frame the composition, offering a striking contrast to the warm tones of the ancient stone structures and the lush foliage below. The foreground is detailed with a lone figure, adding a human scale to the monumental ruins.
