Collection: Vilhelm Hammershøi

Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) was a Danish painter celebrated for his atmospheric, understated interiors and muted color palettes. Known for his masterful use of soft grays, delicate light, and minimal composition, he created quiet, meditative scenes often featuring solitary figures—frequently his wife—set in sparsely furnished rooms. Hammershøi’s work reflected both realism and symbolism, with a timeless, introspective quality that has made him one of Denmark’s most admired artists. Born in Copenhagen, he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, forming close ties with fellow painters including Carl Holsøe. In 1891, he married Ida Ilsted, who became his most frequent model and an essential part of his artistic vision. The couple lived in Copenhagen for most of their lives, with Hammershøi working steadily until his death in 1916.
