Collection: Pierre Bonnard

Pierre Bonnard was a French painter known for turning everyday life into something warm, intimate, and almost dreamlike. As part of Les Nabis, he moved away from realism and focused on emotion, memory, and color.

His art is defined by rich, glowing colors and quiet domestic scenes—rooms, tables, windows, and especially bathrooms. Rather than painting exactly what he saw, Bonnard painted from memory, which gave his work a soft, personal feeling. Colors often feel unexpected but harmonious, and his compositions gently distort space, making the viewer feel like they’ve stepped into a private moment.

He was also drawn to landscapes, especially in the south of France, where light and color became even more intense. Across all his work, the focus remains the same: capturing the feeling of a moment rather than its exact appearance.

In his personal life, Bonnard was quiet and reserved. His lifelong partner, Marthe, appears in many of his paintings, often in intimate, everyday scenes. He lived simply, devoted to his work, and continued painting until his death in 1947.
