Collection: Julian Onderdonk

Julian Onderdonk (1882–1922) was an American painter celebrated for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly his luminous depictions of Texas bluebonnets and Hill Country scenes. Known as the “father of Texas painting,” he captured the region’s changing light, wide skies, and seasonal wildflowers with a vibrant, atmospheric style that blended plein air technique with delicate color harmonies. Onderdonk’s works remain iconic representations of Texas’s natural beauty. Born in San Antonio, Texas, he studied at the Art Students League in New York under William Merritt Chase before returning to his home state to paint full-time. In 1902, he married Gertrude Shipman, and the couple had one son. Despite a career cut short by his untimely death at age 40, Onderdonk left a lasting legacy in American art and inspired generations of Texas painters.
