Collection: Ivan Fedorovich Choultse

Ivan Fedorovich Choultse (1874–1939) was a Russian-born painter renowned for his luminous winter landscapes, glowing sunsets, and masterful treatment of light. Often called the “magician of light,” he captured snow, water, and sky with exceptional clarity and atmosphere, creating works that blended realism with an almost dreamlike radiance. Choultse began his career as a decorator for Tsar Nicholas II before turning fully to painting, studying under Constantin Krüger in Saint Petersburg. His travels through Europe—especially the French Riviera and the Swiss Alps—inspired many of his finest works, which became highly sought after by collectors in Russia, France, England, and the United States. Born in Saint Petersburg, he emigrated to France after the Russian Revolution, becoming a French citizen in 1921. He lived in Paris until his death in 1939, continuing to paint and exhibit internationally.
