Isaac Israels

Isaac Israëls (1865–1934) was a Dutch painter celebrated for his lively, spontaneous depictions of urban life, fashionable society, and leisure scenes. Associated with the Amsterdam Impressionists, he captured bustling streets, cafés, cabarets, and seaside resorts with loose brushwork and a vibrant sense of movement. His portraits and genre scenes reflected a modern, cosmopolitan spirit, often painted on location to preserve the immediacy of the moment. Born in Amsterdam, Israëls was the son of renowned painter Jozef Israëls and showed early artistic talent. He studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague before establishing himself in Amsterdam and later in Paris, where he moved in avant-garde circles. Never married, he devoted his life to painting and traveling, working in cities such as London, Paris, and The Hague until his death in 1934.
