Carl Larsson

Carl Larsson (1853–1919) was a Swedish painter and illustrator celebrated for his charming depictions of domestic life, gardens, and family scenes. Known for his bright watercolors and warm, intimate compositions, Larsson’s works often portrayed his wife, Karin, and their children in the idyllic setting of their home in Sundborn, which became a symbol of Swedish country living. His style blended elements of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau, and Scandinavian folk art, influencing interior design and popular culture in Sweden and beyond. Born in Stockholm into a poor family, Larsson faced a difficult childhood before studying at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts. In 1883, he married fellow artist Karin Bergöö, whose creativity and home design greatly inspired his art. The couple’s partnership produced both a large family and an enduring artistic legacy, with Larsson continuing to paint and publish illustrated books until his death in 1919.
