Collection: Carl Haag

Carl Haag (1820–1915) was a German-born painter renowned for his detailed watercolors and oil paintings of Orientalist subjects, landscapes, and royal portraits. Known for his precise draftsmanship and rich use of color, he captured scenes from his extensive travels through the Middle East, Egypt, and the Holy Land, as well as picturesque views of European countrysides. His works often combined ethnographic accuracy with a romantic sense of atmosphere, making him a favorite among Victorian collectors. Born in Erlangen, Bavaria, Haag studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg and Munich before settling in England in 1847. He became a naturalized British citizen and was appointed painter to Queen Victoria, accompanying her on several trips. Haag never married, devoting much of his life to travel and art until his death in 1915 at his home in Oberwesel, Germany.
