Collection: Albert Edelfelt

Albert Edelfelt (1854–1905) was a Finnish painter celebrated for his portraits, historical scenes, and luminous outdoor compositions that brought Finnish art to international prominence. Known for his refined brushwork and vibrant use of color, Edelfelt captured both the grandeur of historical subjects and the warmth of everyday life. His portraits of cultural figures, including Louis Pasteur, earned him widespread acclaim across Europe. Born in Porvoo, Finland, Edelfelt studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki, the Antwerp Academy, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1888, he married Baroness Ellan de la Chapelle, and they had one son. Dividing his time between Finland and France, Edelfelt played a key role in promoting Finnish art abroad while mentoring younger artists at home. He remained active until his sudden death in 1905, leaving a legacy as one of Finland’s most important painters.
