Collection: Wilhelm Kuhnert

Wilhelm Kuhnert (1865–1926) was a German painter celebrated for his dynamic and highly detailed depictions of African wildlife. One of the first European artists to paint animals in their natural habitats, he gained international recognition for his lifelike portrayals of lions, elephants, and other exotic species, often set against sweeping savannas and dramatic skies. Kuhnert’s works combined scientific accuracy with artistic grandeur, influencing both wildlife art and zoological illustration in the early 20th century. Born in Oppeln, Germany (now Opole, Poland), he studied at the Berlin Academy of Arts under Paul Meyerheim and Ferdinand Bellermann. Extensive expeditions to East Africa and India provided the firsthand observations that defined his career. He married twice, though both unions ended in divorce, and spent much of his later life traveling and painting until his death in 1926.
