Collection: Paul Fischer
Paul Fischer (1860–1934) was a Danish painter celebrated for his vibrant cityscapes, elegant portraits, and depictions of modern urban life in Copenhagen and beyond. Often called “The Painter of Copenhagen,” Fischer captured bustling streets, fashionable society, and coastal scenes with a lively palette and confident brushwork, blending Impressionist influences with a distinctly Scandinavian atmosphere. His work also included delicate portrayals of women, everyday life, and leisure activities, reflecting the cultural optimism of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born into a Jewish family in Copenhagen, Fischer was introduced to art through his father’s lithography business. He studied briefly at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts but developed much of his style independently. In 1885, he married Dagny Grønneberg, and together they moved within Denmark’s artistic and social elite. Fischer continued painting prolifically until his death in 1934.
